History of Women’s Soccer in America
Women’s soccer in America is the top in world today in terms of participation and international competitions. However, this has not been an all easy as it may appear. There is a very interesting history of this soccer which would be very good to remember. First of all, it is important to know that women soccer only got serious in America after it gained fame in Europe and also after the first international competition which was in 1951.
The women soccer has enabled gender equity education promotion all over the states. Maybe this was because of how the women soccer began and this is what we would need to consider. In the 20th century, women soccer was purely an informal recreation game that took place in women colleges and there was no great emphasis put to it.
Besides the colleges, it was also confined to gym classes and was more of an informal pick up game for intramural competitions. But latter on this would change after the first international women soccer competition in 1951. Faith Craig of St. Matthews Parish of North St. Louis organized women league in America for the first time in history of America women soccer.
This would later continue and in 1991, America women soccer team took a try in the women world cup competitions in china. Amazingly, they swept all the 8 games that they played. They had 3 shut outs during this tournament and they managed to win against the Soviet Union 8 nil.
But, trouble came in after this nice title. They never got any more challenges to train better, the team relaxed and when the time came to play friendly matches in 1992, they lost all the 2 games they played. So, they took their lessons and regrouped again in 1993. In 1995, they launched the first women soccer league which would later debut in 2001.
In 1996, 2000, 2004 this team participated in the Olympics games. In 1999, 2003 they also took part in the women world cup tournament. After the 2000 Olympics games, the Women United Soccer Association was formed.
Today, women’s soccer in America dominates as the best in the world. Sports fans and media have been able to accept not just women soccer and also women’s sports in general because of the success that they have seen from the soccer of women in the United States. It started small but has been able to expand rapidly with a lot of success that all can admire.
In deed, the 2 world cup titles, the Olympic gold and silver medals that women’s soccer in America has earned is a great inspiration to many women and men alike who have some interest in soccer. The women have been able to prove that gender equality can be achieved even in the field also. You would not regret spending your time watching them dribble and shield the ball while in action and sometimes you would be cheated to imagine that they are men playing the soccer game.
